If I were the Devil…this is how I would attack pastors...

Well, the Fish House was a hit with the family. We started with the Calamari with spicy Thai sauce and California Sushi Roll, salads, then the Girts a Ya Ya, and one dish of grilled Tilapia. Having had the Shrimp and Grits at Crooke's Corner (supposedly where this all started) and now the Fish House, the Fish House was the favorite!

part 3

If I were the devil, when these pastors decided to actually share the gospel, I’d have them preach a message that sounds like the gospel but is really no gospel at all. I’d get them to make the sinner "say a prayer" whether he truly understands and embraces the gospel or not. I’d have them challenge those who are unregenerate in their audiences to commit totally, try harder, submit fully, and surrender all. I’d get them to preach anything and everything but faith alone in Christ alone for the salvation of their souls. I’d empty a great word like "repent" of its true meaning and fill it with the filthy rags of good deeds cloaked as the gospel of grace. I’d deceive them into evangelizing with a self-centered gospel that focuses more on what the sinner does than on what Christ has done.

If I were the devil I’d get pastors to tolerate youth leaders who teach more devotionally and less theologically. I’d convince them that it was okay if their teens weren’t learning theology and how relevant it was to the everyday life of the average teenager. I’d challenge them to encourage their youth leaders to give safe talks about safe things, things that teenagers related to, enjoyed and understood. I’d encourage them to avoid complex theology like the Trinity, the inerrancy of Scripture, justification by faith and the like so that they "don’t lose" their teenagers. Instead I’d motivate them to embrace youth leaders who serve McNuggets of truth, deep fried in fun and dipped in sweet sauce so that their kids don’t get bored and their parents (aka “tithers”) don’t get mad and leave the church.

If I were the devil I’d get good churches to do lots of good things. I’d get them to build houses for the needy, give food to the poor and reach out to the hurting. I’d encourage them to do all of these things in the name of Jesus but without ever actually sharing the gospel message to those they serve. I’d motivate them to "hack at the leaves of evil" and feel good about it, not letting them realize that they have left “the root of evil” intact. I’d convince these pastors to convince their churches that preaching the gospel was action and service alone. I’d paint a picture of Jesus that only served the poor’s physical needs and leave out his drive to fulfill their deeper, bigger, spiritual needs. If these pastors insisted on preaching the gospel I’d get them to focus only on the proclamation of the message and convince them that serving the hurting in their community was not important at all.

If I were the devil I’d attack the writer of these words with his own inadequacies. I’d remind him of every time he has messed up and failed. I’d show him his own hypocrisy. I’d convince him that he had no right to write such judgmental words. I’d challenge him to take the kinder, gentler course of typing safe, funny things. If that didn’t work I’d convince him that he is somehow better than any struggling pastor.

But I’m not the devil. Satan is. And he doesn’t need any help. He is already doing a very good job at attacking pastors. Don’t you think?

If you were the devil how would you attack pastors?

If I were the Devil…this is how I would attack pastors...

Vacation is great- love the beach, the rest, world's best wife, Debi, and most awesome kids, Ryan, his wife Charity, and Jason! Life is good and the devil is defeated! Also, thanks for yesterday's comments.

part 2

If I were the devil I’d convince pastors that they didn’t need accountability from their closest friends inside the church. I’d persuade them that they needed to keep up the facade and not fess up to their inner struggles. I’d convince them to avoid baring their deepest spiritual battles, hurts and sins to a close, godly friend whom they trust. I’d use scare tactics to accomplish this. Things like, “If word leaked out of your personal struggles you could lose face, influence and, maybe even, your job.” I’d get them to have close friends but not too close. I’d have them buy off on the age-old lie that a pastor cannot have a best friend in their own church. In doing this I’d be helping them to perpetuate a dual life, the fake life they proclaim truth from behind the pulpit and the real life they live when nobody else is watching, listening or applauding. The hypocrisy would make me smile.

If I were the devil I’d convince pastors that they had to do everything. I’d challenge them to lead all the meetings, do all the counseling, oversee all the marrying, do all the burying, to be involved in all the everything of the church. I’d remind them that the former pastor of their church did all these same things. I’d coerce him through the expectations of the old guard in his congregation. I would do everything in my power to get these pastors to avoid Ephesians 4 verses 11 and 12. The last thing I would want them to realize and embrace is that their primary responsibility is to equip God’s people to do the work of the ministry. If they were to read and apply these dangerous verses they could lose their inner sense of self-importance and probably gain ten, twenty or maybe fifty times their spiritual impact on the congregation. That would make me mad if I were the devil.

If I were the devil I’d undermine the typical pastor’s confidence in the Word of God. I’d get them to believe the lie that something so ancient could never truly change a tech savvy generation that is so sophisticated. I’d do this by raising up an army of brilliant philosopher "theologians" who would slowly and subtly undermine the faith of these pastors in the reliability and relevance of Scripture. I’d use these theosophers to communicate fine sounding arguments through cool conversations, hip books and brilliant blogs. I’d use all these tools and more to create doubt about the truth of God’s infallible Word, the relevancy of truth and the power of the message of the cross. Oftentimes I would come at these pastors sideways through another pastor or the youth leader on staff to make pastors feel like they're preaching an obsolete message to a too-cool-for-school crowd. I’d go beyond getting them to change their methods of communication, I’d convince them that the Scriptures, the gospel and the truth is powerless to deeply and wholly transform a soul. I’d use the vast intellect of my blogging pawns to create anger, confusion, discouragement or distraction in the minds of ministry leaders. I’d unleash a new brand of repackaged gnostic pietism on the body of Christ and label it relevant.

If I were the devil I’d convince pastors not to preach the gospel weekly. I’d try to persuade them that the service schedule was too packed with music, sermon points and announcements to take a few minutes out to present the most important message in the world. I’d soothe them with thoughts like, “The church is for Christians” or “You elude to the gospel enough in the flow of your weekly sermon” or “You present the gospel on those special outreach weekends” or whatever. I’d try to distract them from realizing what the early church embraced, that the gospel was “the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes….”

If I were the Devil…this is how I would attack pastors...

I am on vacation this week- getting some rest- to all my friends that say the devil never rests, you're right and that is why he is the devil; and by the way I don't want to be like him!

This article needs to be read by all. It will be posted in three parts becasue of its length-- read on.....
by Greg Stier Dare2Share.org

Part 1

If I were the devil I’d get pastors to build great big churches where they could teach nice things about a nice God. I’d make sure they avoided the dangerous God of the Bible. I’d get them to preach a whole lot about the patience and kindness of God and leave out his holiness and justice. Or I’d get them to preach about the holiness of God to the exclusion of his love and grace. I’d have them preach a one-sided message about a one-sided God instead of the breadth of who He is.

If I were the devil I’d tempt pastors to buy into a distorted gospel of prosperity. I’d convince them to preach a message of "God wants you to be rich" while much of the world dies of starvation. I’d take them deeper into a downward spiral of heresy and greed. Eventually I’d get them to empty the bank accounts of bent, old Bettys and blue collar Bobs to finance their Lexus-driving, $3,000 suit wearing, mansion-dwelling lifestytle of "holy" hedonism. I’d help them cloak their message of greed with a "whatever you donate to this ministry will be multiplied one hundred fold in your own bank account" giving promise.

If I were the devil I’d convince pastors to stay stuck in their old ways. I’d convince them in the power of tradition and tradition alone. I’d challenge them not to think outside the box when it comes to the way they communicate to this generation. I’d motivate them to preach purely theological sermons that were truth heavy and application light. I’d push them to make every week a creedal download with little to no practical application. If this approach didn’t work with pastors, I’d do my best to convince them to trash tradition and preach purely practical sermons with no theology at all. I’d sell them on the lie that it was all about their illustrations, their jokes and their five steps to whatever. I’d challenge them to do this without truly preaching the Word or teaching theology at all. The last thing I’d want them to do is do what St. Peter, St. Paul and St. James did: preach doctrine and application in a balanced way. I would never want these pastors’ congregations to realize how practical and relevant the Word of God is to their everyday lives.

If I were the devil I’d especially attack male pastors through sexual temptation. I’d start “innocently” enough through their thought lives. I’d remind them of that one drop dead gorgeous woman in their congregation who laughs at all his jokes and stares a little too intently when he preaches. I’d then slowly get him to quietly obsess over her and secretly wish that something happened where they could suddenly be together, alone. I’d convince him that it was okay to counsel her in private, that nothing was going to happen. And then I’d do everything in my power to make sure it did. For the pastors who didn’t fall for this more obvious strategy I’d use a secondary strategy of internet pornography. I would create an endless cycle of guilt and quietly seeking forgiveness from God to slowly rob the integrity and dignity from his public preaching and his private soul.

Clever Sayings-

I am heading off to vacation with the family after this Sunday's service. Going to Perdido Key! Going to eat some shrimp and grits at the Fish House! I have posts already for next week- you won't want to miss them. In the meantime enjoy the following:

Don't let your worries get the best of you. Remember, Moses started out as a basket case

Some people are kind, polite, and sweet-spirited - until you try to sit in their pews.

Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisers

It is easier to preach ten sermons than it is to live one.

The good Lord didn't create anything without a purpose, but mosquitoes and sand gnats come close.

When you get to your wit's end, you'll find God lives there.

People are funny; they want the front of the bus, the middle of the road, and the back of the church.

Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on your front door forever.

Quit griping about your church; if it was perfect, you couldn't belong.

If the church wants a better pastor, it only needs to pray for the one it has.

God Himself does not propose to judge a man until he is dead. So why should you?

Some minds are like concrete, thoroughly mixed up and permanently set.

Peace starts with a smile.

I don't know why some people change churches; what difference does it make which one you stay home from?

A lot of church members who are singing Standing on the Promises are just sitting on the premises.

We were called to be witnesses, not lawyers or judges Be ye fishers of men. You catch them - He'll clean them.

Coincidence is when God chooses to remain anonymous.

Don't put a question mark where God put a period.

Don't wait for 6 strong men to take you to church.

Forbidden fruits create many jams.

God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

God grades on the cross, not the curve.

God loves everyone, but probably prefers fruits of the spirit over religious nuts!

God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.

He who angers you, controls you!

If God is your Co-pilot - swap seats!

Prayer: Don't give God instructions -- just report for duty!

The task ahead of us is never as great as the Power behind us.

The Will of God will never take you to where the Grace of God will not protect you.

We don't change the message, the message changes us.

You can tell how big a person is by what it takes to discourage him.

The best mathematical equation I have ever seen: 1 cross + 3 nails = 4 given.

When Ministry Becomes a Job- Pt 2

Some people have a JOB in the church; others involve themselves in a MINISTRY. What's the difference?

If you are doing it just because no one else will, it's a JOB.
If you are doing it to serve the Lord, it's a MINISTRY.

If you quit because somebody criticised you, it was a JOB.
If you keep on serving, it's a MINISTRY.

If you'll do it only as long as it does not interfere with your other activities, it's a JOB.
If you are committed to staying with it even when it means letting go of other things, it's a MINISTRY.

If you quit because no one praised you or thanked you, it was a JOB.
If you stay with it even though nobody recognises your efforts, it is a MINISTRY.

It's hard to get excited about a JOB.
It's almost impossible not to be excited about a MINISTRY.

If our concern is success, it's a JOB.
If our concern is faithfulness, it's a MINISTRY.

An average church is filled with people doing JOBs.
A great and growing church is filled with people involved in MINISTRY.

Where do we fit in? What about us?
If God calls you to a MINISTRY, don't treat it like a JOB.

If you have a JOB,
give it up and find a MINISTRY.

God does not want us feeling stuck with a JOB,
but excited and faithful to Him in a MINISTRY.

When Ministry Becomes a Job- Pt. 1

There is nothing more exhilarating than when one receives a call to ministry from God! It may be to pastor, to serve on a church staff, or be a part of the church leadership team. Ahhh- the Ministry, what bliss and excitement to be used in the Kingdom of God serving His precious people!

Jesus called us to follow His example in ministry: "I didn't come to be served but to serve." It seems that the apostle Paul kept that perspective in what he did and suffered for the cause of the Kingdom of God.

But, there is the possibility that the precious ministry may soon become nothing more than a job. It is approached as a job, worked as a job, hours kept like a job, expectations are those of having a job, etc.

So when do we crossover from ministry to a job?

You know ministry has become a job when...

1. You no longer enjoy serving God's people.

2. People get under your skin and are now a bother to you.

3. There is no flexibility built into your daily schedule for the needs of people. They are viewed as interruptions.

4. You keep 8-5 office hours and everything must happen within that time frame.

5. You become a chronic complainer about others.

6. You expect your boss (Senior Pastor) to give you time off, pay increases, excessive absences.

7. You stay upset at the very people that pay your salary.

8. You no longer have the joy of ministry.

9. You think your job would be easier if it weren't for other people.

10. You are looking to move on to another 'ministry.'

I know there are probably others but I was trying to stay to the popular 'Top 10' format. You may add others in the comments.

Absurdity #28- CDC Wates Your Money!

absurd-ridiculously unreasonable, unsound, or incongruous

“CDC Off Center,” a 115-page oversight report authored by the Minority Office of the Federal Financial Management Subcommittee, under the direction of ranking member Senator Tom Coburn, examines how CDC has tilted off center and makes recommendations about how it might get back on track.

The American people expect CDC to spend its $10 billion budget this year treating and preventing diseases and dealing with public safety threats, including the threat of bioterrorism. While CDC will meet some of those expectations, if history is any guide, it will also waste millions of dollars.

Read more here.

I wondered what all they did- this is scary!!!!!!!!!

'Shrimp and Grits' at Crook's Corner!

Debi and I are in Chapel Hill, NC, visiting my sister, Patrice, and her wonderful family.

Crook's Corner---

"A legend." — Bon Appetit (Best Restaurants of the South)

"The best place to eat in Chapel Hill, in North Carolina and possibly on Earth."— Delta Sky Magazine

Crook's has the reputation for being "the birthplace of Shrimp and Grits."

I had my first award winning shrimp and grits at the famous Crook's Corner a few years back. We had them again last night and they remain a delicious meal. I have tried to make their recipe a few times at home with various results. So it is aways great to eat the real stuff. They have wonderful food and desserts. Check out their website here and spend some time browsing. Colorful history.

We are leaving Monday and heading back to Texas. It is a 19 hour drive! Appreciate your prayers.

Get Stok (stoked)

Wow, for all you coffee lovers out there, found new item on my trip to NC. Stopped at a Mapco Express convenience store to get some coffee and found this sitting next to the creamers. It is Stok- a 40 mg espresso coffee shot (sweetened or unsweetened) to be added to your favorite beverage for an additional punch. (It's half of the caffeine you get in a can of Red Bull.)

Did I say it was free!

Warning label reads: Not for those under 18, pregnant, or caffeine sensitive. Limit 2 per day!

It is available only in convenience stores right now. Check 7-11 for it also. You will be able to buy it publicly in September 2007.

However, for you Ebayers, you can buy it online right now. Go to Ebay and type in Stok. I just bought a box of 100. Going to give it to the staff at the church- more productivity, right!

Here is the website for Stok.

Also, check out new link in side bar under Coffee- Death By Caffeine. They say it would take around 300 Stok coffee shots to kill a 175 lb. person. Putting that in to realistic terms, that would mean drinking a gallon of Stok. Probably not a good thing!

Here is a comment by one satisfied user: Dude I'm drinkin that stuff right now. You gotta get the Energy Coffee you can get there too and then add the shots. Dude, you start shakin and sweatin and you can't write. It's wonderful. And they're free! I love it. Jäger

Remember, keep the buzzzzz going!

Three Red Marbles

During the waning years of the depression in a small south eastern Idaho community, I used to stop by Brother Miller's roadside stand for farm-fresh produce as the season made it available. Food and money were still extremely scarce and bartering was used, extensively.

One particular day Brother Miller was bagging some early potatoes for me. I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily apprising a basket of freshly picked green peas. I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes. Pondering the peas, I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Brother Miller and the ragged boy next to me.

"Hello Barry, how are you today?"

"Hello, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Just admiring them peas, sure look good."

"They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?"

"Fine. Getting' stronger all of the time."

"Good. Anything I can help you with?"

"No, Sir. Just admiring them peas."

"Would you like to take some home?"

"No, Sir. Got nothing' to pay for 'em with."

"Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?"

"All I've got is my prize marble here."

"Is that right? Let me see it."

"Here 'tis. She's a dandy."

"I can see that. Hmmmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?"

"Not exactly .....but, almost."

"Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble."

"Sure will. Thanks, Mr. Miller."

Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me. With a smile she said: "There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes or whatever. When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, perhaps."

I left the stand, smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved to Utah but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys and their bartering. Several years went by each more rapid than the previous one.

Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there I learned that Brother Miller had died.

They were having his viewing that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them.

Upon our arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could. Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts...very professional looking.

They approached Mrs. Miller, standing smiling and composed, by her husband's casket. Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket. Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one, each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary, awkwardly, wiping his eyes.

Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and mentioned the story she had told me about the marbles. Eyes glistening she took my hand and led me to the casket. "Those three young men, that just left, were the boys I told you about. They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim "traded" them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size...they came to pay their debt. We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world," she confided, "but, right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho."

With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three, magnificently shiny, red marbles.

Moral: We will not be remembered by our words, but by our kind deeds.

Absurdity #27- Job More Dangerous than Pastoring?

absurd-ridiculously unreasonable, unsound, or incongruous

I thought that pastoring was rough. Sheep do bite! But their bite is not often fatal like the bite of this persons constituents!

Some might say Doctor Brady Barr is a little eccentric, what with his dressing up as a crocodile to crawl along on his belly and pat the real beasts. But Dr Barr would say his bravery in getting up close and personal with the killer reptiles is all in the name of science. And yes, he did make a snappy dresser.

The zoologist risks life and limb to study up close a colony of Nile crocodiles in Tanzania. And it's no mean feat - the animals can grow up to 20ft long. The expert says he's very safe. His costume consists of a glass fibre head attached to a metal Kevlar reinforced shell, which is smeared with hippo dung to hide his scent.

Dr Barr claims to be unique in having studied all 23 species of crocodiles, alligators and caymans in the wild.

Adds new meaning to a sheep in wolf's clothing!

Who Do You Fear?

Chelsea Clinton was talking to a combat decorated soldier and she asked him what three things he feared most.

He answered:

"Osama, Obama, and Yo Mama."

Absurdity #26- You're a Muslim and a Christian???

absurd-ridiculously unreasonable, unsound, or incongruous

Ann Holmes Redding has been an Episcopal priest for 20 years. She claims she became a Muslim last year, but still considers herself a Christian. According to a Seattle Times article, Redding says she has never believed in original sin, and has struggled with the nature of Jesus' divinity for years. Still, she says she is both Muslim and Christian -- "just like I'm both an American of African descent and a woman. I'm 100 percent both. At the most basic level, I understand the two religions to be compatible. That's all I need." Also, Redding's bishop says he accepts her as both an Episcopal priest and a Muslim.

Redding will start teaching New Testament classes at Seattle University this fall. The Times article says she believes the Trinity -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit -- "is an idea about God" and cannot be taken literally. In addition, she does not believe Jesus and God are the same, but rather that "God is more than Jesus," says the report.

Peter Frank is with the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh, a leading conservative diocese. He says Redding's announcement has created a lot of confusion about biblical Christianity.

Redding's confusing announcement, says Frank, should be addressed by conservative Anglicans. "We Episcopalians owe the rest of American Christianity an apology," he says. "You know, we make your job harder by confusing what Christianity actually teaches or about Jesus Himself.

Well, duh, somebody better help this confused Muslim/Christian!

Absurdity #24- Porn on Rise Among Evangelicals?

absurd-ridiculously unreasonable, unsound, or incongruous

A new survey shows that five of ten Christian men in the U.S. -- and two of ten Christian women -- are addicted to pornography. The survey was conducted by ChristiaNet.com, an online Christian Internet community.

Bill Cooper, president of ChristiaNet.com, says there is an escalation in Internet pornography addiction among evangelicals. The survey found that 50 percent of men who regularly attend church are addicted to pornography, and 20 percent of female churchgoers are also addicted. The Internet has made it easier for people to get trapped in pornography's grip, Cooper explains.

The survey also found that 40 percent of women admitted to being involved in sexual sin in the past year. In addition, 60 percent of women who answered the survey admitted to having significant struggles with lust. Cooper admits he found those results surprising.

"Most of us don't typically think of women as having sexual problems," he shares. "We typically think of men as the ones who are into pornography or the ones who are lusting or maybe having affairs. But that's the part [about the survey] that really surprised us the most."

Those are startling statistics. How is it that we who have been set free are now being ensnared again?

Need to put some safeguards in effect:

Computer in open area-

If not, door left open-

Internet Filters-

Parental and spouse supervision-

Make a pack with spouse that there are no hidden secrets-

Make a pack with God to set a watch over your eyes and heart-

Desire to flee youthful lusts-

What are you doing to protect yourself and family?------ leave comments.

VBS-2007-- Wild and Wet!

We just completed our week of VBS. Wow! What a great time had by all and I do mean all, even the adults enjoyed it!

There was a lot of 'wet time' and yours truly got soaked by the youth workers (lifeguards).

We have great pictures of the event as I was the official photographer. Was that bragging?? Some of them will be posted on the church website this week. Watch for them!

One of my favorite shots is below. Each age group brought food to fill our Food Pantry. The group that brought the most food got to make their leaders an Ice cream Sunday. They became the canvas to get worked over. Three teens got the blessed chance to be doused with ice cream, chocolate syrup, sprinkles, and nuts. Look closely to the pic and you will see them all.

Thanks to all the great 'Lifeguard' workers that made this happen! Big thanks to Brooke and Rachel for the great planning and execution. You're the best!

Meet the Tater Family

I printed this in our bulletin a few years back. It is not original with me and I’m not sure who the author is. However, it is a humorous and insightful way to look at some of the people who attend church.
Dick Tater
He's the self-appointed potentate who feels everything should be done his way. He never serves or works; he just bosses others.

Emmy Tater
She's the member of the family who follows all the latest fads. She’s never really discovered her own identity because she’s always busy trying to be like someone else.

Hezy Tater
When Hezy is asked to help at church, he knows he should, but he always puts it off. He's sure he'll get around to serving God someday.

Carmen Tater
Carmen has an opinion about everything, and you never need to ask what she thinks because she's the first one to tell you.

Speck Tater
Speck's favorite phrase is: "I love work; I can watch others do it for hours." He doesn't get involved, but he's a great observer.

Agi Tater
When Agi was in school, she got poor marks on "plays well with others." Agi is continually in conflict with others, and always seems to be involved in strife and division. No matter what the Pastor or church does, it's never good enough in Agi's eyes.

Sweet Tater
This is the only cordial and cooperative member of the Tater family. Sweet Tater is the ideal member of the church. She has a great attitude, is faithful, committed, supportive, and involved. She doesn’t dictate, imitate, hesitate, commentate, spectate, or agitate!

Can you think of any other 'taters?'

Absurdity #23- No Crosses on Federal Property?

'Who's Watching You?' Father's Day 2007

We had a great Father's Day service yesterday. Gave away 2 tickets in each service to the Texas Rangers at the Ballpark. Seats are behind home plate! Just wish they were doing better.

I wanted to preach on 'Who's Watching You!' You can hear the message on the Vine Fellowship website. The creative team came through with great visuals. We made it a 'wear your favorite team jersey' day and flooded the stage with sports equipment (we even had a fishing boat up there). The idea- we are a society of watchers- sports, etc. However we are fast becoming a society of being 'the watched.' With cameras in banks, at intersections, etc. we are now being watched everyday!

The kicker- in our homes we have been watched for generations as our children see and our children do.

It was well responded to and the men were given wrist bands that stated two things- 'Very Best!' and 'Wholehearted.' We committed to give our very best to God and our families and remain wholehearted to God!

The below video is from a child abuse prevention program in Australia called 'Children see, Children do.' I did not show it to the church because of the graphic nature of it and the possibility it would stir up deep personal issues. I did use images they have for the powerpoint presentation of my sermon. (You can ask for it and I will send it to you).

WARNING VERY GRAPHIC!

My heart is broken- so is God's!

Baskin Robbins- Many Flavors- The Church Too!

There is a big controversy in my area with the Southwestern Baptist Theological School. A Pastor friend of mine here in Arlington, Dwight McKissic, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church, told the seminary chapel students that he prayed in private in tongues. What makes this so significant: he is a Baptist and on the Board of Trustees for the Seminary. Read about it here. It is affecting the entire Southern Baptist Convention. They are once again wrestling with distinctives that make them Baptist and different from all others in the Kingdom of God.

Many flavors abound in the Kingdom of God much like Baskin Robbins.

As A.W. Tozer so brilliantly noted in one of his sermons:

"We are told that when John Wesley was dying, he tried to sing, but his voice was nearly gone. He was almost ninety. He had traveled hundreds of thousands of miles on horseback, preaching three or four times daily in founding a great church. He was plainly Arminian in his theology, but as his Christian family and friends gathered around his bed, he was trying to sing the words of an old Calvinist hymn:

I will praise my Maker while I’ve breath, And when my soul is lost in death, Praise shall employ my nobler powers.

That is why I cannot get all heated up about contending for one theological side or another on that issue. If Isaac Watts, a Calvinist, could write such praise to God and John Wesley, an Arminian, could sing it with yearning and they both can meet and hug one another in glory, why should I allow anyone to force me to confess, “I don’t know which I am!” Why should anyone bother me with an issue like that?

I was created to worship and praise God. I was redeemed that I should worship Him and enjoy Him forever.

That is the primary issue, my brother or sister. That is why we earnestly invite men and women to become converted, taking Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord."

Man, we really need to remember why we are here! Oh, that the world may know we are one in Him!

Absurdity #22- New Face or Two Faced?

absurd-ridiculously unreasonable, unsound, or incongruous

Picture at left is the night of the last Democratic debates. The pic on the right is the day after? Was it just good lighting and sublime makeup the night before or injections??????

The instant Hillary appears, a woman whispers, “Oh look at Hillary. She’s had work done!” WBZ’s political guru Jon Keller was asked, "Notice anything about Hillary? “Botox,” he replied, not missing a beat. “But it’s time for Botox to win one.” Kerry couldn't with Botox, will Hillary be able too?

In the offices of dermatologist-to-the-stars Jeffrey Dover of SkinCare Physicians, Chestnut Hill, a visiting “anchorwoman,” said Dover, noted Hillary’s “flawless, almost dewy” appearance and wondered if it was spectacular makeup or Botox, or perhaps fillers or microdermabrasion.

Who knows? Not Bill, not Secret Service, not us, only Hillary!

Os Hillman on Understanding the Source of Anger

A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control. —Proverbs 29:11

The workplace can be a pressure-packed world. The demands that are often put on us can bring out things that we never knew were there. Sometimes we begin to think that the source of that pressure is to blame for our response to the pressure. It could be an event, a spouse, a boss, a client, a child, or even a driver who cuts us off in traffic.

I recall responding to a close friend one time, "If you had not done that, I would never have responded that way." Later I learned that this response had little truth to it. We all choose to get angry. No one else is to blame for our anger.

"The circumstances of life, the events of life, and the people around me in life, do not make me the way I am, but reveal the way I am" [Dr. Sam Peeples].

This simple quote has had a profound impact on how I view my anger now. Anger only reveals what is inside of me. I can't blame anyone but me for my response to a situation. I have learned that anger is only the symptom of something else that is going on inside of me. This quote now resides on my refrigerator door as a daily reminder of the truth about my response to life's situations.

It has been said that anger is like the warning panel on the dash of your car. It is the light that tells us something is going on under the hood and we need to find out what is the source of the problem. I discovered that the source of anger is often unmet expectations or personal rights. We believe we are entitled to a particular outcome to a situation. When this doesn't happen, it triggers something in us. At the core of this is fear, often a fear of failure or rejection, fear of what others think, fear of the unknown.

If you struggle with anger, ask God to reveal the source of that anger. Ask Him to heal you of any fears that may be the root of your anger. Ask God to help you take responsibility for your response to difficult situations.

Addicted to Coffee?

You know you are addicted to coffee when...

You're employee of the month at the local coffee house and you don't even work there…

your eyes stay open when you sneeze…

you chew on other people's fingernails…

you go to sleep just so you can wake up and smell the coffee…

your favorite entree: coffee meatloaf...

you name your cats 'Cream' and 'Sugar'…

your lips are permanently stuck in the sipping position…

you have a picture of your coffee mug on your coffee mug…

you haven't blinked since the last lunar eclipse…

you just completed another sweater and you don't even know how to knit...

your wife announces she is leaving you and your first thought was, 'Ha ha! More coffee for me!'

Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay!

At a fund raising dinner for a school that serves learning-disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: "When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?"

The audience was stilled by the query.

The father continued. "I believe that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child."

Then he told the following story:

Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, "Do you think they'll let me play?" Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, "We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning."

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. His Father watched with a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart. The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.

Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, "Shay, run to first! Run to first!" Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.

Everyone yelled, "Run to second, run to second!" Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball ... the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.

All were screaming, "Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay."

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, "Run to third! Shay, run to third!"

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, "Shay, run home! Run home!" Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team.

"That day", said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, "the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world."

Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

To all those that make a bold statement, "That it is all about winning," you need to think that again! That day everyone was a winner including Shay!

Absurdity #21 - The Bible is Indecent?

absurd-ridiculously unreasonable, unsound, or incongruous

HONG KONG (Reuters) - More than 800 Hong Kong residents have called on authorities to reclassify the Bible as "indecent" due to its sexual and violent content, following an uproar over a sex column in a university student journal.

A spokesperson for Hong Kong's Television and Entertainment Licensing authority (TELA) said it had received 838 complaints about the Bible by noon Wednesday.

The complaints follow the launch of an anonymous Web site -- www.truthbible.net -- which said the holy book "made one tremble" given its sexual and violent content, including rape and incest.

continuing...
If the Bible is similarly classified as "indecent" by authorities, only those over 18 could buy the holy book and it would need to be sealed in a wrapper with a statutory warning notice. TELA said it was still undecided on whether the Bible had violated Hong Kong's obscene and indecent articles laws.

But a local protestant minister shrugged off this possibility. "If there is rape mentioned in the Bible, it doesn't mean it encourages those activities," said Reverend Wu Chi-wai. "It's just common sense ... I don't think that criticism will have strong support from the public," he added.
FYI- it wasn't deemed 'indecent.'

Absurdity #20- Life's Short. Get a Divorce

absurd-ridiculously unreasonable, unsound, or incongruous

An all-female law firm is turning heads in Chicago with a new billboard and a blunt message: "Life's Short. Get a Divorce.''

The billboard, sponsored by Fetman, Garland & Associates, Ltd., a firm that specializes in divorce cases, features the six-pack abs of a headless male torso and tanned female cleavage heaving forth from a black lace bra.

The ad is the brainchild of Corri Fetman, "Law firm advertising is boring…Everything's always the same. It's lawyers in libraries with a suit on and the law books behind them. They don't say anything. What, I should hire you because you have a law degree? C'mon. So we wanted to try something different."

Reaction from those who work in and around Chicago's divorce courts has been less than enthusiastic.

"It's grotesque,'' said John Ducanto, past president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. "It's totally undignified and offensive."

"It trivializes divorce and I think it's absolutely disgusting," Rick Tivers, a clinical social worker at the Center for Divorce Recovery in Chicago. "Divorce is traumatic enough without this kind of [advertising]. We try and help people go through the divorce process with as much integrity as possible. A lot of my work is helping people grieve the loss of a divorce, and their own sense of betrayal. This makes divorce seem like it's not a big deal, and it's a huge deal for many people.''

What it says to me- marriage is boring; give up on your spouse for a buff bod like one of these; marriage is all about hot sex; look what you're missing by being married; divorce has never been so easy or so good.

We are a messed up society!

p.s. The sign was eventually taken down.

We're Friendly in Texas

In a crowded city at a busy bus stop, a beautiful young woman wearing a tight leather skirt was waiting for a bus. As the bus stopped and it was her turn to get on, she became aware that her skirt was too tight to allow her leg to come up to the height of the first step of the bus.

Slightly embarrassed and with a quick smile to the bus driver, she reached behind her to unzip her skirt a little, thinking that this would give her enough slack to raise her leg. She tried to take the step, only to discover that she couldn't.

So, a little more embarrassed, she once again reached behind her to unzip her skirt a little more, and for the second time attempted the step. Once again, much to her chagrin, she could not raise her leg.

With a little smile to the driver, she again reached behind to unzip a little more and again was unable to take the step.

About this time, a large Texan, who was standing behind her picked her up easily by the waist and placed her gently on the step of the bus. She went ballistic and turned to the would-be Samaritan and screeched, "How dare you touch my body! I don't even know who you are!"

The Texan smiled and drawled, "Well, ma'am, normally I would agree with you, but after you unzipped my fly three times, I kind of figured we was friends."

Absurdity #19- Left Condones Vandalism Against Right

absurd-ridiculously unreasonable, unsound, or incongruous

Robert Murrow, a spokesman for the city's Department of Public Works, saw the vandalism as he drove to work this morning on I-83 near the Guilford Avenue exit. He called The Sun, saying that someone had poured paint on the image of Rush Limbaugh's face.

Limbaugh, who is nationally syndicated, can be heard on WCBM 680 AM from noon to 3 p.m.

"It looks like they took globs of paint and threw it on his face. It looks great. It did my heart good," said Murrow, who admittedly is not a Limbaugh fan.

Kurt L. Kocher, chief spokesman for the city's Department of Public Works and Murrow's supervisor, took issue with Murrow's statement.

"As much as you don't like Rush Limbaugh, you don't endorse vandalism, period," Kocher said. "It's an outrageous comment, and he shouldn't have said it. It is not our policy. I think he got overenthusiastic about his feelings for Mr. Limbaugh. I am very upset about that comment, and I've let him know I'm very upset about that comment. It's his personal comment and it's wrong. It does not belong out there in any kind of official capacity. As far as I'm concerned, he was not speaking for the department."
Robert L. Pettit, the general manager for WCBM, said the vandalism was first noticed Monday and that the billboard is to be replaced later today. It was put up two weeks ago in an alley near Preston Street and Mount Royal Avenue.

"It's tough to be number 1," Pettit said of Limbaugh's show. "People deface billboards all the time. It's going to be fixed today."

Could this be classified a 'hate crime?'

Benaiah - Mighty Man of God- Pt. 3

Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a brave fighter from Kabzeel who did mighty things. He killed two of the best warriors from Moab. He also went down into a pit and killed a lion on a snowy day. Benaiah killed an Egyptian who was about seven and one-half feet tall and had a spear as large as a weaver s rod. Benaiah had a club, but he grabbed the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear. 1 Chronicles 11:22-23

The lion is the most dangerous of the three enemies. There is a reason that the Lion is called the king of beasts. The typical male lion is between 350 to 500 pounds of muscle. It is 3 ½ feet tall and 9 feet long from the nose to the tail. With one blow of his paw he can smash the human skull, one of the strongest bones in our bodies. With his jaws he can bite through any bone in the human body.

Not only did Benaiah meet a lion but he met it in the worst possible place: in a pit. A place where you are very close to it and there is no escape. But not just in a pit: in a pit on a day when the snow had fallen. I imagine Benaiah’s anxiety as he faced this lion in such close proximity. His footing was slick. Trying to grip his weapon, his hands were red with the numbness of the cold. The glare of the sun in his eyes forced him to squint to see. The worst possible foe, in the worst place, under the worst circumstances.

Yet, he won! How? The answer is in the man, his deeds simply revealed what he already was. He was already a mighty man of valor. These deeds simply made it clear to everybody else that he was that kind of man.

Peter tells us, “Your adversary, the Devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” The Devil, like a Lion, has tremendous authority and power and he is seeking someone to devour.

All of us have a Lion in your life? Lucifer is real. But don’t make the mistake of thinking about a little red imp with a trident he carries to poke you with. Lucifer is a dark and evil angel with one agenda your complete destruction.

You say ok, so there is an evil spirit, an evil angel that was thrown out of heaven like a drunk is tossed out of a western saloon. Why would he want to hurt me? The answer is that he doesn’t care about you he wants to hurt God and you are one of God’s favorite kids.

We all have enemies that we are afraid to meet. It may be something you are afraid of or something you fear might happen: a physical disease, a crushing disappointment, the loss of a loved one, financial ruin, or failure.

Let’s stand against our adversary the devil, slap him in the face and utterly destroy his attacks against us!

ONE DAY MEMORIAL?

Many years ago Debi and I were visiting a pastor friend and ministering in his church in PA. We decided to take a trip down to Washington DC. We ended up at the Vietnam War Memorial.

I was not prepared for the emotions that would eventually overtake me. As I walked the paths before me I began thinking back to the years as a US Army Drill Sergeant training troops at Ft. Jackson, SC. The faces, the lives, the young men hopefully trained to do their mission and survive!

When I made it to the Wall, I was overcome with tears as I wondered how many names on that Wall were men I had directly trained. The Wall was not just a list of names to me but valiant men and women who served their country the best they knew how. My wife began to comfort me and I finally got a grip.

Today, I honor and pray for the brave service men and women that have gone before us to give us the freedom we enjoy everyday.

God bless the USA! I am proud to be an American!

ONE DAY MEMORIAL?
Loved ones gone to serve the country,
faithful to the call.
Some return with memories,
some don't return at all.
So varied are the reasons one
would put his life on hold;
whatever be his motive,
our respect, it should be bold.
Opinion secondary,
his service is a must
for to ensure that we can stand
and say "In God We Trust!"
One day aside for honor? Oh
but such would be a crime!
For I will live a life of gratitude
but all the time!
Branch and rank no matter--
respect be due them each.
Prayers said for every one of them,
to Heaven do they reach.

Absurdity #18- Are Bones Really Attractive?

absurd-ridiculously unreasonable, unsound, or incongruous

click for larger pic

As anyone who has seen her on screen knows, Cate Blanchett has always been slender. But the 37-year-old actress’s gaunt appearance startled onlookers as she arrived at a benefit gala. With her collarbones protruding and looking painfully thin, the Lord Of The Rings star was barely recognisable as she walked down the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The stick-thin look was not helped by the Oscar-winner’s shock of scarlet make-up or her swept-up hair. An observer said: "Perhaps it was just an unfortunate trick of the light, but her shoulders and chest were all bony while her collarbones looked really prominent. But the observer said: "Although Cate was apparently in good spirits, she was definitely one of the skinniest celebrities there."

No wonder our kids are struggling with the 'desire to be thin' syndrome while following these wonderful role models!

Only time bones look good:
1. to an archaeologist and the discovery of an ancient tomb
2. maybe to premed students!
3....can you add to the list?

Benaiah - Mighty Man of God- Pt. 2

Benaiah slew an Egyptian.

Egypt is used as a type or picture of the world with its armies, temples, libraries, pharaohs, kings, all of the pomp, glory and splendor of man. It is a picture of the superficial, empty glory of the world and its ways.

This is no small enemy. The Egyptian was between 7 ½ and 9 feet tall. (About the same size as Goliath that David killed.) The Egyptian had a spear like a flag pole - about 6 or 7 inches thick. The Message Bible says ‘a spear like a ship's boom!’

1 Jn 2:15-17 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world — the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does — comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. NIV

The world with all of its power, allure and temptations is no small enemy.

2 Ti 4:10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica… KJV

There is no greater heartache as a Pastor than when one sees an otherwise faithful Christian draw back to the world and succumbs to its influences and follows Christ no more. ‘Left me behind in my trouble’ was Paul’s view of Demas. (Side note: Men suffer most when "wounded in the house of their friends.")

Demas’ sole motive on leaving Paul was the love of worldly ease and home comforts. To love the world, and the things that are in the world, is one of the chief sources of danger to our soul's welfare.

It’s all about success in the world’s view. From God’s perspective, the successful man is one that has defeated the influences of the world.

Grits à Ya Ya - Shrimp and Grits!

I was in Pensacola attending a Globe International meeting on Monday night. In one of Robert Pooley's blogs he mentioned shrimp and grits at the Fish Restaurant. I love this dish, make it myself, and always look for restaurants that serve it. So yesterday, Doug Gehman (sorry Robert) and I went there before catching my flight back to Arlington. I was overjoyed! Here is the email that I sent the restaurant while waiting for my flight. It is a must eat place if you are ever that way.

"I am sitting at the Pensacola airport heading back to DFW area.

I ate with a friend at the Fish House today and had the shrimp and grits. I have had them at other restaurants but yours was superb. The presentation was outstanding and complimented the delicious meal. I was delighted with the taste. I then finished it off with the Tiramisu and must say again the best I've had.

Jodi, our waitress made the experience enjoyable and should be commended for the great job of service.

I will eat there again and I am now looking for an excuse to return to Pensacola. Hope to vacation there in August and we will be back there for sure with the family.

Will make mention of the experience on my blog!

Thanks again, Pastor David Kerr"
